About Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a touch therapy based on the theory that different points (reflexes) on the feet (and hands) correspond to internal organs, structures and different areas of the body.

History

Supporting our physical and mental wellbeing using touch therapies on hands and feet has been around in various forms from the Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Chinese and Ancient Indian times. It is also thought that touch therapies on hands and feet have been passed down through oral traditions of the African tribes and First Nations of America. It has developed and evolved, with the theories being worked on in Europe in the 16th century, the late 1800’s to the turn of the century where it developed into something called zone therapy and then over the last 100 years became what we now know as reflexology.

Treatments

Using the foot maps as a guide, along with information from you, I will use gentle pressure working on the whole foot, encompassing the whole foot map. During the treatment, your feet will also guide me where to work; how they feel, tender points or hard areas, sensitivities felt as granular sensations under the skin. This is especially helpful if coming for repeat treatments. Working these areas as well as on the whole foot supports the view that our bodies work as a whole organisim with interdependent parts rather than isolated parts and functions.

Reflexologists will not offer diagnosis or cure, but offer a holistic approach to healing. Through relaxation and promoting a feeling of well being, physical symptoms may be eased. Nourishing our soul and mind in turn supports the body.

As a complimentary therapy, reflexology is drug and chemical free which may appeal to some people, it also means that it can be used alongside other treatments.

If you are more interested in the detail of the theories, I am happy to answer questions as best I can!
